Curatorial Statement:

This exhibition, "I'd Be Empowered If...", presents a powerful collection of work by African women photographers, each capturing the strength and resilience of women within their communities. The photographers' submissions highlight women working independently, contributing to local economies, and caring for their families. These images underscore the undeniable truth that empowered women strengthen their societies. Beyond showcasing these powerful visuals, we sought to understand what empowerment truly meant to the photographers themselves, aligning with SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

By asking "I'd be empowered if...", we gained valuable insights into the specific needs and aspirations of these artists. Their responses, alongside the submitted work, revealed a shared passion for documenting the challenges and triumphs of women in their communities. Many expressed a desire for greater access to resources, training, and platforms to amplify their voices. This exhibition, therefore, serves as both a celebration of their current work and a call to action for further support.

Through "I'd Be Empowered If...", Unpublished Africa aims to provide a platform for these photographers to share their stories and connect with a wider audience. We hope that this exhibition inspires viewers to follow their journeys and actively contribute to their empowerment, whether through professional opportunities, mentorship, or intentional support. By fostering a community that values and amplifies the voices of women photographers, we can collectively work towards a more equitable and representative visual storytelling landscape.

"I'd Be Empowered If..." Addresses the Following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 5: Gender Equality: The exhibition directly promotes gender equality by showcasing the work of women photographers and amplifying their voices.

  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth: The exhibition highlights women's contributions to economic development and supports women entrepreneurs.

  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities: The exhibition aims to reduce inequalities by providing a platform for marginalized voices.

This white paper, created alongside the "I'd Be Empowered If" exhibition examines the complexities of empowerment. As stated in the abstract, structural barriers impede access to resources, hindering progress.
