FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"I'd Be Empowered If..." Exhibition Celebrates African Women Photographers and Empowers Change

Harare, Zimbabwe – 8 March 2025 – Unpublished Africa proudly presents "I'd Be Empowered If...", a powerful group photography exhibition showcasing the work of ten talented African women photographers from nine countries, open from 8 March 2025 to 8 April 2025. This exhibition explores themes of empowerment, resilience, and community through the lens of women who are shaping the visual narrative of Africa.

"I'd Be Empowered If..." delves into the aspirations and realities of these photographers, revealing their unique perspectives on economic empowerment, climate action, cultural heritage, and human stories. By asking the simple yet profound question, "I'd be empowered if...", Unpublished Africa has created a platform for these artists to articulate their needs and desires for growth and recognition within the industry.

The participating photographers' work showcases the strength and resilience of women in their communities, challenging stereotypes and amplifying marginalized voices. Their images document women entrepreneurs, climate change activists, custodians of cultural heritage, and individuals navigating the complexities of daily life.

"This exhibition is more than just a display of beautiful images," says the founder, Anesu Chikumba at Unpublished Africa. "It's a call to action. We want to create a space where these photographers can share their stories, connect with a wider audience, and inspire positive change."

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, Unpublished Africa will also be highlighting the work of other talented African women photographers from their network through their newsletter and social media channels, further amplifying their voices and celebrating their contributions to the visual storytelling landscape.

"I'd Be Empowered If..." Addresses the Following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 5: Gender Equality: The exhibition directly promotes gender equality by showcasing the work of women photographers and amplifying their voices.

  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth: The exhibition highlights women's contributions to economic development and supports women entrepreneurs.

  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities: The exhibition aims to reduce inequalities by providing a platform for marginalized voices.

Quote from participant: “Being considered for the ' I'd Be Empowered If ' exhibition marks a significant milestone in my journey as an emerging documentary photographer. This opportunity allows me to share my photojournalistic work with the world, representing Zambia and telling powerful stories through photography.
